At the WHO virtual press conference on COVID-19 on 7 June, WHO Director General Tredos Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported that despite the decrease in the number of new cases, there is still a dichotomous picture in the world.
While high-income countries have vaccinated nearly 44% of the world’s doses and are starting to talk about the end of restrictions, low-income countries manage only 0.4% and face alarming situations.
Uneven distribution of vaccines allows the coronavirus to spread and increases the chances of new variants that make vaccines less effective, making uneven vaccination a global threat.
The meeting with the G7 country leaders is a call to share vaccine doses, resources and technology, so that together we can achieve the reduction of COVID-19 as soon as possible.
