Fatty liver: a silent enemy that deserves attention
Did you know that many people only find out they have fat in the liver after a simple blood test? This condition, known as hepatic steatosis, is more common than most imagine and can progress silently until it causes serious complications.
Symptoms are often not noticeable. Frequent fatigue, mild abdominal discomfort, or a general feeling of malaise may appear, but are usually ignored. That is why fatty liver is called a silent enemy. If left untreated, it can advance to inflammation, fibrosis, and even cirrhosis.
The causes are mainly linked to lifestyle. Excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet, obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol are some of the most common factors. However, even people who are slim and do not drink can develop the condition, since genetics and a sedentary lifestyle also play a significant role.
The good news is that the condition can be reversed with simple but consistent changes. Following a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins, reducing the intake of saturated fats and sugars, and practising regular physical activity are fundamental steps. In some cases, doctors may prescribe medication to help control related factors such as cholesterol and diabetes.
The most important thing is not to wait for symptoms. Visiting your doctor and having regular blood tests can protect your health before the problem worsens. And you, have you had a check-up this year?
