Pope Francis’ “Penance Journey” to Canada
Pope Francis landed last Sunday, July 24, in Edmonton, Canada, on a visit to the country.
The papal trip was an apology on behalf of the Catholic Church for indigenous Canadian children abused, both physically and sexually, in residence halls run by priests and nuns until the 1970s in Canada.
The Pope declared that this would be a “journey of penance” and a movement to re-establish ties between Canadian indigenous communities and the Catholic Church.
Pope Francis’ itinerary on the six-day trip began in Edmonton, where he was received by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Governor General Mary Simon, the first indigenous woman to hold this position in the country.
The itinerary also included a visit to other cities in Canada, such as Quebec, and Iqaluit, and a visit to one of the indigenous communities, Maskwacis, besides other official engagements with indigenous communities
