Inuk leader and former ambassador Mary Simon, was chosen to serve as governor general of Canada, and is the first Indian to be named to the role by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The oath as 30th Governor General of Canada took place yesterday, July 26, 2021 in Ottawa.
During a press conference, Simon declared: “my appointment is a historic and inspiring moment for Canada”.
Mary Simon is an Inuk from Kuujjuaq, a village in northeast Quebec, her mother is an Inuk and her father a merchant. Simon says that she lived a traditional lifestyle, but she also learned about the non-native world from her father, a white man from Manitoba, and so she says with conviction “I can relate to everyone, no matter where they live. who expect or what they need to overcome.”
