ONLINE PASSPORT RENEWAL EXPANDS

Renewing a passport without waiting in line, travelling to a service location or mailing documents is now an option for many more Canadians. The change is particularly welcome for people with busy schedules, those living far from major urban centres and anyone who faces barriers to accessing in-person services.

The Canadian government has expanded its online passport renewal system, making the service available to all eligible Canadian adults in Canada. The change removes the previous limit on the number of people who could use the service and is part of the modernization of passport services.

Through the digital system, the renewal process can be completed online, including submitting the application, photograph and payment. The photo, however, must be taken by a commercial photographer and provided to the applicant as a digital file that meets official requirements.

The standard processing time for online renewals is 20 business days, the same standard applied to simplified adult renewals submitted by mail or at most Service Canada Centres. Applicants can also track the status of their application while it is being processed.

Canadians who need their passport sooner must apply in person. Some Service Canada Centres and passport offices offer 10-business-day service, as well as express and urgent options.

The expansion also improves access for people living in rural or remote communities and those with mobility challenges. In-person and mail services will continue to be available for Canadians who prefer or require those alternatives.

Before beginning the digital process, applicants should carefully review the eligibility criteria, as online renewal requirements differ in some respects from applications submitted in person or by mail.

The expansion marks another step in modernizing Canadian public services, providing a secure, accessible and convenient option for renewing an essential document.
