Climate Crisis in Canada: When Warnings Become the Norm

Climate Crisis in Canada: When Warnings Become the Norm

Canada is among the countries most affected by climate change — and among those most expected to lead. With a landmass warming nearly twice as fast as the global average, the country is experiencing drier summers, harsher winters, severe flooding, and increasingly frequent wildfires.

Despite setting ambitious goals, such as cutting emissions by up to 45% by 2030, Canada ranks only 62nd out of 67 countries on the Climate Change Performance Index. This international ranking evaluates carbon emissions, energy use, renewable sources, and climate policies. The country’s low placement highlights a clear gap between promises and action — especially as major investments in fossil fuels continue.

While stronger public policy is still catching up, citizens can make a difference: conserve energy, reduce single-use plastics, choose greener transport, support clean energy, and demand meaningful environmental leadership. Climate action starts at home — and with each one of us.
