How to Help Your Pet Cope with the Loss of an Owner
Losing an owner can be a devastating experience for a pet. They may show signs of grief, such as changes in appetite, apathetic behaviour, or constant searching for the deceased. If, in addition, the pet needs to move to a new home and be adopted by someone else, this transition can be even more challenging.
Firstly, maintain a consistent routine to provide a sense of security, even during the move. Feeding, walks, and playtime should follow regular schedules to help stabilize your pet’s daily life. Offer extra attention and comfort; the presence of someone who cares can be reassuring. If possible, introduce the new home and new person gradually to help your pet adjust. Provide their toys and personal items to make them feel more comfortable. If your pet’s behaviour does not improve or if there are difficulties in adapting, considering help from a veterinarian or behaviour specialist may be useful. Remember that, just like us, pets also need time to adjust and find a new balance after a loss.
