This is the reality for many people. Even in one of Canada’s months, leaving patients without ongoing care and
increasing reliance on emergency services.
Now, the province of Ontario is working to change this situation. A new agreement with family doctors includes higher compensation, incentives to accept new patients, and expanded hours of care, including evenings and weekends.
In practice, this is beginning to open new possibilities.
Physicians are now encouraged to see more patients, including those with more complex conditions who are often left without regular follow-up. Another important step is reducing pressure on hospitals.
With more care being delivered directly in clinics, the expectation is to shorten emergency wait times and improve access to the healthcare system as a whole.
The plan also includes measures to attract and retain healthcare professionals, especially in regions facing greater shortages. In recent years, the province has increased the number of doctors and nurses, but demand
continues to grow.
These changes are already underway, but those trying to their daily lives.
